NonVisual Desktop Access (NVDA) is a free and open source screen-reader for computers that use Microsoft Windows. Once it is installed, when you hover your mouse over the screen it will tell you what is there whether it is text or images.

On their download page you can either ‘donate and download’ or ‘skip donation and download’.
